Text Messaging Platform Is Effective & User Friendly for Students & University

St. Louis, MO (October 4, 2006) - Nine out of 10 U.S. college students are cell phone users so it is no surprise that one of the nation's leading universities is using the technology to communicate with students. The Information Technology Program at the University of Southern California is interacting with students through text messaging; allowing them to learn more about the program and learn about events that will enrich their campus experience.

"Considering the majority of students have mobile phones, integrating text messaging into our communication mix was an obvious step," said Jonielle Schmidt, a USC ITP advisor. "We feel it is important to interact with the students on their terms and their familiarity with text messaging provides an excellent channel" Schmidt added. "MESSAGEbuzz was our choice because their software is user friendly and includes all the functionality and reporting we need both now and in the future, and we don't have to worry about which provider a student uses," explained Schmidt.

The ITP department sponsored a campus scavenger hunt to introduce the department to a wider student population and offered prizes to entice students in diverse majors to take part. The three week long challenge was an interactive way for students to not only learn about the Information Technology Program, but many facets of campus life.
